Symbolism in The Valley of Ashes Essay In this novel F.S. Fitzgerald tells us about a great social and moral decline of the USA. He conveys this concept through a great number of symbols. The novel is abundant in them. As far as the valley is concerned, it can be explained as the main symbol of decline of people. In this valley, all objects and living beings are composed of symbolic ash and dust, which directly depict a barren land. Dust is associated with the smallest particles of matter of no value. However, these particles may interfere with seeing the truth. In fact, it is something that lies on forgotten objects that no one cares about and the ashes remain from what burned and turned into dust. These words are often found in the work and indicate a decline in all spheres of human life. They are symbols of what remains after the destruction or destruction of matter, thanks to which an increment of meaning is created in the representation of the basic concept: the dream of the protagonist is unachievable. Describing the ash valley, the author widely uses color symbols such as a gray color. Gray means the disappearance of hopes and dreams. It symbolizes decadence, monotony, disappointment. It represents moral decay, spiritual emptiness and death. The word shadow carries an important semantic message, this word is link between the valley of the ashes and the Wilson garage and even with by the owner, by combining these three images into a single symbol of misery and poverty. Dreary backdrop is a contrast to East and West Egg. It contrasts sharply with the worlds of Gatsby and Daisy. The only attraction is the billboard with the image of the blue eyes of the doctor oculist T. J. Eckleburg. His eyes express sadness piercing the whole work. They symbolize the indifference with which the characters perceive other peoples misfortunes. The eyes are half way between West Egg and New York hanging over the characters they seem to personify the idea of a god looking at the materialistic and careless world of The Great Gatsby. All this is aimed at creating an atmosphere of despondency, melancholy of indifference as a contrast to the noisy parties of the jazz century, with its desire for pleasures and a carefree idle life. This symbolizes the decline that was in society at a time when people pursued wealth and glamor at all costs.

My highest spiritual gifts were those of mercy, serving, and administration. I tend to constantly volunteer for the works of the Church, even if they have no hint of glamour in them. Overusing such gifts make me seek for approval or please people more than pleasing God.   Since my highest personality profile plotting was â€Å"I† this makes me more of a leader than a follower. Abuse of this personality type would make me overpower people in leadership and make me less of a team player. It was an evident match that I had mercy as my serving as one of the top spiritual gifts because my personality was one who aimed to please people and to do jobs consistently. This was intended for service because of the fact that I can be good with people and influence them well.   While I saw that I was expected to be more passive, I realized that my behavior and Spiritual Gifts had given me the capacity to be active and people-oriented. This assessment provided significant insights into my behavior and communication styles. Most of them, I already knew I had possessed. However, this activity enabled me to see them in a new light. However, after being the recipient of many positive reactions and letters, she came to the realization that, wh ile the movie did not expressly show her vision, it did convey the correct message. She claimed that, while every fan might miss the best part, what was there would be its gift, and that she hoped they would accept the spirit with which it was given (LaGrone 50). She also quite often answers questions on whether she liked the film by saying that the book was not film and vice versa. She is right. This is the reason why Spielberg took the decision to differ slightly from this great novel. However, he stayed true to her message, especially on overcoming adversity. The screenplay creates a successful and faithful adaptation, via its capturing of the novel’s characters, plot, setting, themes and characters (LaGrone 51). Spielberg faithfully sticks to the central themes of the novel. In the novel, Celie is used by Walker as the protagonist, showing how asserting oneself aids an individual in resisting oppression. This comes out in her letters to Nettie, especially touching on Albe rt, her cruel husband (McBride 172). The movie also sheds light upon this theme. Spielberg, however, turns these letters into scenes full of power and vitality. In one standout scene during dinner, where Albert discovers that Celie is moving to Memphis with Shug and leaving him in the process, there is the use of direct quotes lifted from the book. Cellie shoots to her feet and calls him â€Å"lowdown dog†. In the novel, Celie writes that she is black, poor, ugly and could not cook, but at least she was there (McBride 172). However, during the film, Celie says this to Albert, straight to his face. Spielberg incorporates the same core characters into the movie, from the book. Whoopi Goldberg encapsulates what Walker intended, but breathes new life into Celie’s character, via her hidden smiles, sly winks and muffled laughter. While this is not evident in the novel, these differences aid the audience to see and hear Celie’s transformation from an invisible, passive woman into an independent and strong one (Lupack 101). The movie also closely portrays Shug’s character, just as in the book, where she changes Celie’s life via acting as a catalyst. The screen translation, however, has one flaw, as it contains scenes that show Shug as a vulnerable woman. The movie attempts to create conflict with her father who is a preacher and disapproves of her lifestyle. She is depicted trying to reconcile and impress her dad. In the book, however, she is a free from oppression rebel who is also quite unrepentant. The films characterization of Albert is also slightly off what can be gleaned from the book. At first, the movie portrays Albert accurately as a cold, domineering husband who wed Celie not for love but convenience. Later, it differs slightly from the book since Albert

[pic] History of Chess The origins of chess are not exactly clear, though most believe it evolved from earlier chess-like games played in India almost two thousand years ago. The game of chess we know today has been around since the 15th century where it became popular in Europe. The Goal of Chess Chess is a game played between two opponents on opposite sides of a board containing 64 squares of alternating colors. Each player has 16 pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 8 pawns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the other king. Checkmate happens when the king is in a position to be captured (in check) and cannot escape from capture. At the beginning of the game the chessboard is laid out so that each player has the white (or light) color square in the bottom right-hand side. The chess pieces are then arranged the same way each time. The second row (or rank) is filled with pawns. The rooks go in the corners, then the knights next to them, followed by the bishops, and finally the queen, who always goes on her own matching color (white queen on white, black queen on black), and the king on the remaining square. The player with the white pieces always moves first. Therefore, players generally decide who will get to be white by chance or luck such as flipping a coin or having one player guess the color of the hidden pawn in the other player's hand. White then makes a move, followed by black, then white again, then black and so on until the end of the game. How the Chess Pieces Move Each of the 6 different kinds of pieces moves differently. Pieces cannot move through other pieces (though the knight can jump over other pieces), and can never move onto a square with one of their own pieces. However, they can be moved to take the place of an opponent's piece which is then captured. Pieces are generally moved into positions where they can capture other pieces (by landing on their square and then replacing them), defend their own pieces in case of capture, or control important squares in the game. The King The king is the most important piece, but is one of the weakest. The king can only move one square in any direction – up, down, to the sides, and diagonally. Touch-move If a player touches one of their own pieces they must move that piece as long as it is a legal move. If a player touches an opponent’s piece, they must capture that piece. A player who wishes to touch a piece only to adjust it on the board must first announce the intention, usually by saying â€Å"adjust†. Introduction to Clocks and Timers Most tournaments use timers to regulate the time spent on each game, not on each move. Each player gets the same amount of time to use for their entire game and can decide how to spend that time. Once a player makes a move they then touch a button or hit a lever to start the opponent’s clock. If a player runs out of time and the opponent calls the time, then the player who ran out of time loses the game (unless the opponent does not have enough pieces to checkmate, in which case it is a draw). Throughout the history of our country, there has not just been an injustice towards black slaves, but also towards women, with both being unfairly discriminated against. It was the work of many individuals who brought the unfamiliar taste for rights for all God’s creatures to the mouths of many people. Elizabeth and Frederick banded people together to fight for their God given rights and to be freed from a tyrannical society. Elizabeth Cady Stanton fought to be freed from the usurpations upon woman’s liberty from a tyrannical male society that ruled over her and woman alike; Frederick Douglass fought to free him and his fellow slaves from bondage and to gain the rights that he and his fellow slaves rightfully deserved. Both of these individuals were pioneers in this freedom movement and both supported each other in their fight. Frederick Douglass was one of the many who attended the Seneca Falls Convention to sh ow his support, and also signed the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, showing that his fight for freedom was just as important as Stanton’s fight for women’s rights.
